The domestic tour through Germany kicked off in Freiburg on 10 April, marking the arrival of the original FIFA World Cup Trophy on host country soil following its three-month journey around the globe as part of the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola.
The German Tour's 364,500 guests surpassed even the wildest dreams of joint organisers FIFA and the 2006 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee (OC). On its travels through the host nation, more than 100,000 souvenir seekers had their picture taken with football's Holy Grail.
The 2006 FIFA World Cup Tour visited one city in each of the regional associations of the German Football Association (DFB) and passed through all of Germany's 16 federal states. It spread the FIFA World Cup spirit, stoking excitement ahead of the tournament in areas far removed from the venues at which the matches were played. By offering an interesting mix of entertainment, information, competitions and ways to take part, FIFA, the OC and the Official Partners succeeded in bringing a festive atmosphere wherever they went. Some lucky visitors even went home with match tickets.
The tour represented a platform for FIFA to communicate its aims and values and to promote its events, symbols and trademarks. The star attraction was the FIFA World Cup Trophy itself, giving fans the chance to get up close and personal with the most coveted prize in world football for the first time ever, while the official tournament mascot GOLEO VI entertained visitors both young and old.
The 2006 FIFA World Cup OC also used the entire tour as an opportunity to pay tribute to the country's many volunteers and their outstanding contribution to the tournament preparations, German football in general and to all sectors of society.
